April 23 Superintendent Update Graphic

August 23, 2023

Good afternoon, Warren Scholars, Families, and Staff,

We have a few important items for the week of August 23rd.

Today marks the 20th day of the 2023-2024 school year, and we continue to be off to a great start. This week, I would like to start by sharing some Warren Joy from these first four weeks of the school year.

Congratulations to Mrs. Callie Hoppes for being recognized as a Top 10 teacher in the State. Mrs. Hoppes has been a Lakeside Teacher in Warren for 27 years, and we are proud to have her represent Lakeside Elementary and Warren Township. We wish her the best of luck on being named Indiana's 2023 Teacher of the Year.

Last year, we placed a priority focus on our K-3 Literacy at each of our elementary schools, and I am excited to share that we made significant growth in this area, specifically with IREAD3. Great job to our teachers, interventionists, instructional assistants, tutors, and scholars who were a part of this growth. Warren had the highest growth in Marion County, and we look to continue growing this school year!

Last but not least, I want to recognize our scholars and staff for their exceptional attendance to start this school year. Our goal is to Strive for Less than 5 absences or 97% attendance, and we are off to a great start! Keep up the great work!

As you know, we have been experiencing some high temperatures this week. When the heat index reaches 90 degrees or higher, we begin making adjustments by moving as many activities inside as possible or shifting activities to morning or later in the evening when the temperature is lower. For extracurricular activities at the 5-12 level, we follow IHSAA guidance as well as guidance from our partnership with Community Health Network. For events this week, families can expect to receive communication from either the school's principal or the school's athletic or band director. Whether you are involved in extracurricular activities or not, please increase your water consumption during this time. Dehydration can happen much quicker with this extreme heat.

Please remember that Homefest is next Friday, September 1st. The Warren Council of PTAs is still looking for vendors, and you can still sign up to participate. Please see their website linked here for more information.

Below are a couple of calendar reminders:

  • Monday, September 4th - Labor Day - No School
  • Tuesday, September 5th - eLearning Day / Staff Professional Development Day
  • Friday, October 6th - Parent Teacher Conference Day - No School

This Saturday, August 26th, the WC Gold Brigade Marching Band and Guard will present their annual Community Day performance! The event will take place on the 16th Street Multipurpose Field (west of the Performing Arts Center) and will feature their competition show, "The Secrets of the Sirens." Gates will open at 1:30 pm, and the performance will start at 2:00 pm. The cost of admission will be a donation to the Gold Brigade (a case of water, a box of individually wrapped snacks, or a financial donation). Bring a folding chair or blanket and enjoy the show (and the cooler weather! ). If you have any questions, please contact Band Director Ed Meckes (emeckes@warren.k12.in.us).

Thank you for your continued investment for Warren students, schools, and staff.

Together…#Warrenwill find the Joy in the Journey.

Dr. Tim Hanson, Superintendent of Schools for MSD Warren Township
