The Warren Central football team continues their 2019 season with a share of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC) title for the second year in a row. Although conference play contained ups and downs for the Warriors, the team was able to pull through and finish 5-2 in the MIC to tie for first place in the conference with Carmel, Ben Davis and North Central.

“It was very nice for a very inexperienced team to do so well [and win the championship], but now they have their sights set on something more,” head coach Jason West said.

Throughout their season, the Warriors have faced tough top ranked opponents such as Carmel, Lawrence North and Trinity. Although the Warriors were unable to come away with the desired perfect season, they played each game hard and took each loss as a learning experience in what to carry on to the next match up.

For their senior night, the boys played Youthbuild High School from Columbus, Ohio. As both the final home game and the final regular season game of the season, the boys played hard and pushed the entire game and were able to finish the fourth quarter with 37 points, their second highest scoring game of the season. The Warriors were able to keep the Centurions at a score of 6, the lowest amount of points an opponent has scored while facing the Warren Central football team.

Although not every game turned out victorious for the Warriors, they took each loss as an opportunity to improve and turn it into a win for the next week. On Sept. 20, the Warriors travelled to conference rivals Ben Davis where after double overtime, the Warriors lost by three points late in the game. Keeping the game close throughout the night and then losing in the end was a tough moment for the Warriors and fans alike.

“Our Ben Davis game was the hardest since we thought we won the game, but with a second chance rekick we lost. That was tough on us all for sure,” West said.

The Warriors began sectional play with a matchup against the North Central Panthers. Although in the previous matchup against the Panthers the Warriors came away victorious, the Warriors made sure to stay focused and not take the game lightly. The team scored 10 points in the first quarter and kept a 17-0 lead until late in the fourth quarter when the Panthers scored 10 points of their own. With a final score of 17-10, the Warriors advance to regionals and will play Lawrence North next. Currently, the Warriors are ranked no. 11 in the state and hope to rise in the rankings as they continue into their tournament season.

As the Warriors look to take home their second consecutive sectional championship, they hope to knock off the no. 34 ranked team in the state to continue their 2019 season and run to the state finals.

“6A football is a brutal road coming out of Indianapolis. We just have to focus on going 1-0 each week, and we have as good of a chance as anyone,” West said.
